Why is it that someone suffering sudden cardiac arrest in one community can have a 500% better chance of surviving and returning to their family and life than in another city? CPR has been in practice for more than five decades, but SCA resuscitation rates on average have remained very low. However, there are pockets of excellence where meaningful survival rates have crossed the 50% threshold. Many of the partnering communities in the HeartRescue Project—a national initiative funded by Medtronic Philanthropy tasked with improving SCA rates by 50% in five years in targeted geographic areas—have seen remarkable progress with the implementation of high-performance CPR in their communities.
The nationally-vetted resuscitation guidelines now call for each and every CPR event to have the CPR quality monitored throughout the event. What does that mean? Dr. Kupas is also associate professor of emergency medicine and associate chief academic officer for simulation and medical education at Geisinger Health System in Danville, PA.
